Last post we talked about taking the lead while walking your dog. One important item that you need to walk your dog with is a leash. There are so many different types of leashes out there for dogs. So which one is the best for you and your dog?
From my experience and what's been recommended is a very simple, short leash with a slip collar. Make sure to fasten the collar over the top of the dog's head and use the leash to gently lift the dogs head up. The picture to the left shows the collar fastened underneath the neck, what is advised is that this is on the top of the neck. By having the leash fastened at the top of the neck, it gives you more control over your dog where you can lead him where you want him to go. This also shows a sign of healthy self-esteem in your dog.
What about those flexi leashes? Yes, it might seem like it gives your dog more freedom, but it is harder to control your dog on your walk. You can still establish that freedom with a regular leash.
Either way, don't let your dog's excitement take over, make sure you are taking the lead. Don't allow them to go wild when you take out the leash. Keep them calm, this will help to set the stage for you walk.
Happy dog walking!
